Eczema-Prone Skin in Babies: Your Questions Answered

Written in partnership with Dr. Clarence De Belilovsky, Dermatologist; Member of the Mustela Experts Circle

Quick summary: Eczema-prone skin (atopic dermatitis) is a common, hereditary condition in babies and children. It is not contagious, does not leave permanent marks, and tends to improve with age. Daily use of emollient products, a clean home environment, and guidance from your GP or dermatologist are the three pillars of management.

Breastfeeding & Diet

Does breastfeeding help or worsen eczema-prone skin?

Breastfeeding is generally beneficial — it helps protect babies from infections and allergies. Some people suggest mothers should avoid certain foods if their baby is already allergic, but there is no formal clinical proof that dietary restriction is necessary.

The key points:

  • Eczema-prone skin is rarely caused by a food allergy.
  • There is no evidence-based reason to stop breastfeeding if your baby has eczema
  • Always discuss dietary decisions with your GP or a paediatric dermatologist.

Do I need to exclude certain foods to prevent eczema flare-ups?

Not necessarily. Eczema-prone skin is rarely caused by a food allergy or intolerance. That said, some foods can irritate skin on contact — for example, around the mouth when swallowing — and trigger an immune response.

If you suspect a food is causing flare-ups, consult a dermatologist or allergist rather than eliminating foods without guidance.

Daily Skincare & Treatment

Which products should I use daily for baby eczema-prone skin?

Dermatologist-recommended emollient products are the cornerstone of daily eczema management. Used consistently, they:

  • Rebuild the skin's natural oily barrier.
  • Repair and protect the skin barrier long-term.
  • Can reduce itching by up to 95% immediately upon application.

Apply emollient products at least twice a day, after a bath is ideal. Important: Do not apply emollient products to oozing patches during a flare-up. Your doctor will prescribe a targeted treatment for active flare-ups.

Mustela's Stelatopia range, including Stelatopia+ Lipid-replenishing Cream, is specifically formulated for eczema-prone skin in babies, children and adults.

Flare-Ups: Triggers, Prevention & What to Expect

When is my child at risk of eczema flare-ups?

Eczema-prone skin naturally alternates between periods of flare-ups and periods of remission. Exact triggers vary by child, but certain situations increase the likelihood of a flare-up:

  • Teething.
  • Colds or upper respiratory infections (nasopharyngitis).
  • Excessive sweating or heat.
  • Environmental allergens (dust mites, pet dander).

Using adapted emollient skincare daily — even during calm periods — is the most effective way to extend remission and reduce the frequency of flare-ups.

What can I do to prevent eczema flare-ups?

While flare-ups cannot always be fully prevented, the following steps significantly reduce their frequency and severity:

  • Apply an emollient product at least twice a day, every day, even when skin looks calm.
  • Ventilate your home regularly to reduce dust mites and indoor allergens.
  • Wash soft toys like stuffed animals regularly.
  • Avoid activities that trigger excessive sweating.
  • Use fragrance-free, hypoallergenic skincare products.

Vaccinations

Should I vaccinate my child if they have eczema-prone skin?

Yes — absolutely. Vaccines do not aggravate eczema-prone skin and protect your child from serious diseases including diphtheria, tetanus, and polio.

The one practical consideration: if your child is experiencing an active flare-up on the day of the scheduled vaccination, it is reasonable to delay by a few days to avoid additional distress.

Genetics & What to Expect Long-Term

If eczema is hereditary, will my child's flare-ups be as severe as mine?

No. Heredity determines whether a child has an atopic tendency — not how severely it presents. Your child's eczema may be considerably milder than yours, or it may manifest differently. Every child's skin is unique.

Does eczema-prone skin leave permanent marks?

No — not at all. Even when rashes are severe and develop into oozing patches or crusts, eczema-prone skin does not leave lasting marks.

Two more reassuring facts:

  • Eczema-prone skin is not contagious.
  • It tends to improve — and often resolves — as children grow older.

Symptoms & When to See a Doctor

My child has swollen lymph nodes during flare-ups — is this normal?

Yes, it can happen. During a flare-up, skin inflammation activates the immune system, which can cause nearby lymph nodes to swell as a natural defence response.

Superinfection (bacterial infection of the patches) is possible but rare. If you are concerned, consult your GP or dermatologist for a proper assessment.

Eczema-Prone Skin vs Contact Dermatitis: What's the Difference?

Both are allergic reactions, but they are quite different in origin and management:

  • Eczema-prone skin (atopic dermatitis): Often hereditary. Can appear within the first months of life and tends to improve with age. It alternates between flare-ups and periods of remission, and requires ongoing management even between episodes.
  • Contact dermatitis: Can appear at any age — more commonly during puberty or adulthood. It is triggered by specific contact with a substance (solvents, nickel, rubber, certain medications). It resolves once the trigger is removed and does not require ongoing long-term treatment.
