our commitments

We have a responsibility to our children.

Just like parents, Mustela as a brand has a responsibility to ensure a sustainable future for our children. We have a long-standing commitment to minimising the impact of our products on people and the environment, and to supporting projects that improve children's quality of life. And our plans are just as ambitious. Today, our projects are just as ambitious!

Our aim: to help achieve global climate targets by 2050

Last December, at the UN Climate Change Conference, we joined 500 other B Corp certified companies in committing to help meet global climate goals by 2050 by transforming our sourcing and manufacturing processes as close to consumers as possible and adopting a circular approach to the life of our products and their packaging.

Sourcing

reponsible-sourcing - Mustela Australia - 1
Responsible sourcing
With a commitment to responsible sourcing, some of the key natural ingredients in the Mustela® ranges, such as avocado, are sourced from channels prioritised by Laboratoires Expanscience, of which the brand is a part. Since 2011, Laboratoires Expanscience has been a member of the UEBT (Union for Ethical Biotrade), a non-profit association that promotes ethical sourcing that respects people and biodiversity, to improve its sourcing practices. Our avocados are responsibly sourced and UEBT verified.

Natural and organic ingredients
Since our creation, we have chosen the best ingredients from the plant world, giving priority to organic produce, while ensuring the safety of our products with a strict formulation charter.

The fight against waste
We transform avocados destined to be thrown away to create the active cosmetic ingredients in our products. The whole avocado (even the stone) is transformed into oil and powder from which the avocado perseose found in our products is derived.

Composition and production

green-extraction-processes - Mustela Australia - 1
Green extraction processes
We use specific technologies that respect people and the planet: molecular distillation (an environmentally friendly process that separates and concentrates the premium oil components) and biotechnologies such as enzymatic engineering, a substitute for chemical substances.
energy-consumption - Mustela Australia - 1
Reducing our consumption
Since 2020, for every 100 units produced, we have reduced our electricity consumption by 19.4%, our gas consumption by 24.6% and our water consumption by 13.2%.
green-energy - Mustela Australia - 1
Green energy supply
Since 2018, we have purchased 100% green electricity from renewable energy sources (hydropower, etc...) for our production site in France. For every 100% of electricity consumed by the Expanscience production site, 100% of renewable electricity of European origin is fed into the grid.

Packaging and distribution

Eco-designed-products - Mustela Australia - 1
Eco-designed products
Our products are eco-designed throughout their lifecycle. Bottles and cases are recyclable, packaging is lightweight to contain only the right amount of material and leaflets have been removed. Where we have boxes, they are made from paperboard sourced from sustainably managed forests and printed with vegetable oil-based inks.

Refill points
We are currently experimenting with bulk sales, i.e. the sale of non-pre-packaged products. The idea is to take the eco-design of our products one step further, especially our packaging, which is being reduced. Bulk, a green distribution method, is part of a circular economy approach and offers an alternative to plastic bottles.

Optimising journeys and reusing cardboard boxes
GEODIS' storage warehouse is located less than 800 metres from our factory (ISO14001 certified - environmental management standard). Did you know? The cardboard boxes from our Mustela production plant have a second life! We reuse them to send some of your orders, instead of our old large new boxes. A solution designed to make better use of what already exists and reduce our impact.
