A committed and independent French family-owned brand since 1950.

Our history began in 1950, when entrepreneur Paul Berthomé partnered with pharmacist Claude Guillon to create the very first baby cleansing milk. It was a technical innovation, but also a way to free up time for parents — particularly for mothers at the time.


Our ambition has remained the same for generations: to be by parents' side and make their lives easier with our natural origin skincare ranges.

1950

Paul Berthomé partnered with pharmacist Claude Guillon to create the very first cleansing milk specially formulated for baby skin. A technical innovation, but also a way to free up time for parents.

1977

Expanscience began manufacturing plant-based active ingredients in-house (extracts, distillates, oils, butters, powders) using "green" technologies that are kind to people and the environment: molecular distillation and biotechnologies.

1982

The Mustela Foundation was established to support research projects on child development and parenthood around the world.

2004

Jean-Paul Berthomé, son of the founder, signed the United Nations Global Compact — a pioneering commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Responsibility.

2012

Mustela published a groundbreaking study in the British Journal of Dermatology, leading to major discoveries about the immaturity of the skin barrier in children under 2 years of age, and the 4 skin types we inherit at birth.

2018

Expanscience became the first dermo-cosmetic laboratory in the world to obtain the B Corp certification.

2019

At the UN Climate Conference, Mustela made a commitment to contribute to global climate targets by 2050.

2021

Expanscience Laboratories launched its IMPACT strategy to become a positive-impact, regenerative company by 2030/2040.

2022

Expanscience became a mission-driven company — a major milestone in its transition to a positive impact business model.

2022

About forty nonprofit and private partners dedicated to supporting all forms of parenthood, including Mustela, joined forces to launch the first Maison des Parents in the heart of Paris.

2008 – Launch of Stelaprotect: the first range dedicated to hypersensitive skin in newborns, babies and children.

2020 – Launch of the first certified organic range for the whole family, from birth. Made up of four fragrance-free essentials, it is formulated with organic olive oil from Nîmes and exceeds Cosmos Organic standards thanks to its vegan, eco-designed and highly natural formulas.

2020 – Mustela trialled a bulk purchasing model — selling products without pre-packaging. The idea? To go even further in the eco-design of our products, particularly in reducing packaging, with a refillable bottle called REVIENS!

2021 – The first multi-use product for the whole family! The universal balm features 3 avocado extracts from the whole fruit (skin, flesh and seed) to harness all its benefits and care for the skin.

2022 – A 2-in-1 from head to toe! Mustela launched its first solid shower shampoo enriched with organic avocado oil and organic olive oil, gently cleansing both hair and body.

2023 – Together with 4 other dermo-cosmetic players, we joined the "#PharmaRecharge" consortium to offer, for the first time, 15 iconic products in an eco-responsible refillable bottle available in pharmacies!

Our production site since 1957


85% of our products are made in France, at our Épernon site in the Eure-et-Loir department. From the very beginning, we have chosen to control our entire value chain — from research and manufacturing through to marketing — to ensure the quality and safety of our products at every stage.

Today, Mustela remains a family-owned, independent brand — owned by the Berthomé family, founders of Laboratoires Expanscience, and led by Paul's son, Jean-Paul.
